The Fourth of July holiday ended in tragedy in the 1000 block of 14th Street Southeast, where D.C. police said a 3-year-old girl was hit by a stray bullet.
Police say the little girl is being treated for critical injuries at a hospital.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said the girl’s aunt, who asked News4 not to identify her.
The shooting happened around 3 a.m. after the family had just finished watching fireworks.
“All we need is everybody keep us in their prayers,” the aunt said.
Police believe at least one person was shooting a gun, and a bullet went into a parked car where the girl was sitting with her family. She was hit in her upper body.
Her aunt says she’s not doing well and is on life support.
Neighbors said they can’t believe this happened. Many told News4 they heard the shots but thought they were fireworks.
My heart goes out to the family, and I hope she gets well,” said Tarita Bumbray, a neighbor. “I hope she survives through this. They need to stop the violence in the community.”
Police did not release any information about the suspects yet, but they had a constant presence on the street throughout Saturday morning.
Police are offering a $10,000 award for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
