A 3-year-old girl who was struck by a stray bullet in Southeast D.C. after watching Fourth of July fireworks with her family has died.
The girl was identified as Honesty Cheadle of Southeast D.C.
At around 3 a.m. on July 5, officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 1000 block of 14th Street Southeast, police said.
Investigators believe at least one person was shooting a gun, and a bullet went into a parked car where the girl was sitting with her family. She was hit in her upper body.
“This is a tragedy for Honesty’s family and our entire city, and I express my deepest condolences to her loved ones as they cope with such an unimaginable loss,” said Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith in a statement. “Our detectives are working hard, pursuing several leads, and will do everything in their power to find those responsible for this shooting and bring them to justice.”
D.C. police said it is investigating the shooting as a homicide, and the case is being handled by the MPD Major Case Squad.
MPD said that anyone with knowledge that could help the case should take no action but asked the police at (202) 727-9099 or text its tip line at 50411. Police are offering $25,000 to anyone with information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
