NEW YORK (WPIX) – Nearly 24 years later, three more victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center have been identified, New York City officials announced Thursday.
New York City Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jason Graham and Mayor Eric Adams announced the 1,651st, 1,652nd, and 1,653rd persons to be identified through DNA analysis of remains recovered from the attack that claimed 2,753 lives.
Ryan Fitzgerald of Floral Park, Barbara Keating of Palm Springs, California, and an adult woman whose name was withheld at the family’s request, were the three to be positively identified. Fitzgerald was identified through remains recovered in 2002, and Keating through remains found in 2001.
Fitzgerald was a foreign currency trader at Fiduciary Trust and had just moved into Manhattan, according to his obituary. He was 26 years old.
Keating, 72, spent 25 years in public service, including a decade as executive director of the Big Brothers Big Sisters outside of Boston. She survived breast cancer twice, her obituary said.
“Each new identification testifies to the promise of science and sustained outreach to families despite the passage of time. We continue this work as our way of honoring the lost,” Dr. Graham said.
Roughly 1,100 victims, or roughly 40% of those who died on 9/11, remain unidentified, according to the medical examiner’s office.
