CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WPIX) – Three people are dead and eight others injured in a shooting at a club in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights early Sunday morning, according to the NYPD.
The shooting happened at a “crowded club” called Taste of the City on Franklin Avenue, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.
Three men — ages 19, 27, and 35 — were killed in the shooting. Three women and six more men, all between ages 19 and 61, were shot and taken to area hospitals, police said. They sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Police initially reported 11 victims but updated that number early Sunday afternoon.
Investigators believe there were four shooters involved, but have not made any arrests, Tisch said. At least 42 shots were fired from multiple guns, Tisch added, making an update from the initial report of 36 shots fired.
The shooting, which appears to be gang-related, occurred after a dispute in the club, according to Tisch. In a statement to Nexstar’s WPIX, Taste of the City Lounge’s owners said they are fully cooperating with law enforcement.
“At this time, our hearts are with the families who lost loved ones and those who were injured. We are devastated by this tragedy and are keeping everyone affected in our prayers,” the owners said.
Locals told WPIX that shootings aren’t uncommon in the area, but the scale is unusually large.
“The area in general, there’s always been shootings, there’s always fights and stuff like that,” one local said. “But something like that, that’s crazy. That’s probably the worst of it.”
“It’s a terrible shooting that occurred in the city of New York,” Tisch said at a news briefing Sunday morning.
The shooting does, however, come amid a record low year for gun violence in New York City.
“I mean, we have the lowest numbers of shooting incidents and shooting victims seven months into the year that we’ve seen on record in the city of New York,” Tisch said. “Something like this is, of course, thank God an anomaly and it’s a terrible thing that happened this morning, but we’re going to investigate and get to the bottom of what went down.”
