A Kentucky man who assaulted a police officer in April just days after winning a state-record $167m Powerball jackpot wants to waive his right to a trial and just serve out his prison sentence.
James Farthing originally pleaded not guilty in May to battery charges and asked for a jury trial. Now the Kentucky Parole Board has revealed he is willing to skip any probable cause or final probation hearing and to serve out the currently unknown sentence.
Farthing allegedly punching and kicking him while the officer was trying to break up an altercation
The altercation with the law enforcement officer happened at a Florida hotel on April 30, with Farthing allegedly punching and kicking him while the officer was trying to break up an altercation.
In addition to the count of battery against a law enforcement officer, Farthing also violated parole and resisted arrest. His criminal history includes theft, receiving stolen property, drug charges, tampering with evidence, and partaking in organized crime.
After winning the $167m from a $2 ticket, Farthing told local media that he was trying to be a better man as he’s caused his mother a lot of stress over the years. He intends to give half of the winnings to her and has the option to get paid in 30 annual payments or take a full cash sum of $77.3m.
