The Trombone Shorty Foundation has officially opened registration for its 2025/26 school year at the acclaimed Trombone Shorty Academy, inviting young musicians from across New Orleans to take part in a program that nurtures both talent and tradition.
Designed for youth ages 12 to 18, the Academy is a free after-school initiative that not only teaches students how to play in a musical ensemble but also deepens their connection to the rich musical heritage of New Orleans. From second-line rhythms to jazz and funk classics, participants get hands-on experience under the guidance of professional musicians and cultural mentors.
The program has become a cornerstone in preserving the city’s musical legacy while equipping the next generation with the tools to carry it forward. With past alumni going on to perform nationally and internationally, the Academy continues to offer a powerful platform for aspiring artists.
Registration is now open, and the deadline to apply is August 22. Auditions will be held on Monday, August 25. The Foundation is encouraging families, educators, and community leaders to help spread the word and ensure every eligible young musician has a chance to participate.
