Susan C. Thomson, an editor, business columnist and reporter over nearly three decades at the Post Dispatch, died on June 8 at 86.
An obituary states, “Thomson joined the Post-Dispatch in 1976 and spent seven years, from 1982 to 1989, as business editor, followed by a two-year stint as a columnist on business issues. She was the first woman to serve as the newspaper’s business editor.
“As a columnist, she wrote about companies, issues and people in the St. Louis business world. As she put it in her initial column, ‘anything will go, as long as it adds to our understanding of living and making a living in St. Louis.’
“In 1990-91, she served as president of the Society of American Business Writers and Editors. Later, between 1991 and her retirement in 2005, she reported on higher education for the newspaper.
“David Nicklaus, a retired business reporter and columnist who worked with Thomson for many years, said the newspaper’s business staff grew and its business coverage expanded under her leadership. He recalled that she developed Business Plus, a weekly business tabloid that began appearing in the newspaper in 1988.”
