SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Hawai’i women’s soccer team earned a hard-fought point on the road and picked up its second-straight shutout with a 0-0 draw against UC Santa Barbara in Big West action Thursday.
Reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Week Lauren Marquez finished with five saves to lead a Rainbow Wahine defense that posted a clean sheet for the second-straight match. UH has not allowed a goal in 219 consecutive minutes dating back to the Portland State match, while it’s the first time October 2019 that the ‘Bows have recorded back-to-back shutouts.
Each side had a quality chance to take the lead in the closing minutes of the match, but couldn’t break through. Amber Gilbert put a shot on frame in the 88th minute to give UH a corner kick opportunity, which Emily Cottrell played beautifully near the back post for Jacey Jicha, who had her shot attempt go just high.
UCSB (1-6-4, 0-1-1 Big West) got their look with just over a minute remaining, as Elise Ziem took a shot a few yards from the top of the box that UH goalie Lauren Marquez made a diving save on to preserve the draw.
The Rainbow Wahine (4-2-1, 1-0-1 Big West) had a few good looks at goal early on, most notably on a pair of Eliza Ammendolia shots on goal. Ammendolia got a shot off on frame following a counter attack in the eighth minute before getting another look in the 21st minute on a through ball from Gilbert, but both were saved by UCSB goalie Evann Smith.
From there the turned up the pressure on their offensive end, firing off three shots on goal in a four-minute span late in the first half that were all saved by Marquez. The reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Week came up with saves in the 36th, 37th and 39th minutes to keep the match scoreless headed into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Rainbow Wahine had an opportunity to strike first as Gilbert fired a shot off from the edge of the box that went a little wide. In the 62nd minute, Marquez recorded her fourth save to fend off a UCSB chance following a shot on goal by Ziem.
The result kept Hawai’i in a tie atop the conference standings with four points, and even with Long Beach State through two matches. Thursday’s match also marked the second straight time that UH and UCSB have played to a scoreless tie.
Marquez’s shutout was her third of the season and fifth of her career while also making it the first time the graduate student has recorded consecutive shutouts. The Rainbow Wahine have also allowed just six goals on the season – a number the leads The Big West.
UH concludes its first conference road trip of the season on Sunday at Cal Poly at 9 a.m. HT. The match will be streamed ESPN+.
