Two people were struck and killed by a car near the foot of the Manhattan bridge in Chinatown early Saturday morning, police said, and the driver is in custody.
A Chevy Impala sedan exiting the bridge at Canal Street and Bowery hit a male cyclist and a female pedestrian on the sidewalk at around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, police said, adding that both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The high speed collision also caused significant damage to an unoccupied NYPD auxiliary van parked nearby, according to photos of the scene and the NYPD.
Police say the driver was taken into custody, but no charges had been filed as of Saturday morning. An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
The incident comes just weeks after the city’s Department of Transportation announced that traffic deaths in New York had reached a record low with 87 fatalities in the first half of 2025.
