Tarboro, N.C. — An Edgecombe County deputy was involved in a fatal shooting and stabbing at a home on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
Sheriff Cleveland Atkinson said the deputy was injured when he was stabbed at a home in the 4300 block of McNair Road. The suspect died after being shot by the deputy. The deputy was previously stabbed by the suspect with an unknown weapon.
Atkinson told WRAL the suspect, a man, was trying to hurt a family member, prompting an emergency call. The situation escalated when deputies arrived.
The deputy was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
Sky 5 video showed authorities surrounding the single-story home, which was surrounded by crime scene tape.
No other details were immediately available.
The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the incident, which is standard protocol for an officer or deputy-involved shooting.
