Deputies: Road rage incident caused fatal Polk County crash


The Polk County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday that an August crash that killed a 53-year-old man was the result of a road rage incident.The incident happened on Aug. 26. Authorities said John Schmidt, 53, of Pleasantville, was driving southbound on Highway 65, north of Army Post Road, when he lost control of his vehicle. He crossed the center median and was hit by two vehicles in the northbound lanes. Schmidt died as a result of the crash, and the other victims suffered minor injuries.After an investigation, deputies said they determined that Schmidt and 32-year-old Steven Elmer Clark were traveling southbound on Highway 65 at a high rate of speed and involved in a road rage incident. They said Schmidt then lost control of his vehicle, resulting in his death.Clark, of Indianola, is charged with homicide by vehicle – reckless driving and homicide by vehicle – drag racing. Deputies said Clark turned himself in to the Polk County Jail and has since been released on bond.
